Biking 50 States

How
many states
have
you
biked?

I've
biked
30...

I think.

Can
I count
Nevada?

When
I
biked
Death
Valley...

I rented
a
bike
in
Las Vegas.

For
fitting
I rode it
around
the
parking
lot.

In
Las
Vegas,
Nevada.

before
driving
to
Death Valley,
California.

Does
that
count?

If so,
I have 31
states
under
my belt.

And my
drive
home
will give
me
Pennsylvania!

Imagine
my
surprise
when
I cross
the
Potomac....

And
find
myself
in
Maryland!

Woo-hoo!

Pull
over
the
Prius!

I
gotta
bike!

But
where?

A
gas
station?

A
parking
lot?

Look!

Follow
those
bikers!

A
trail!

Right
by
the
Potomac!

Excuse me, sir.

Would you
take my
picture...

biking
Maryland?

The man
I ask, Clay,
turns out
to be
a
mega-biker.

In his
youth
he biked
across
America!

As
did
I!

His little
Sophie
waits
while we
trade
biking stories.

So nice
how
biking
finds me
friends...

even
in
Maryland!

Now
for
the
long drive
to
Pennsylvania.

As I
drive
into the
mountains
I watch
fall
progress.

I
love
the
yellows...

and
the
reds!

Sometimes
I think
Ripley
and
Stella
have the best
views.

I take
a break
to
rest
my eyes...

and
rest
the
bikes...

I watch
picnickers
and
handholders
enjoying
the
fall
views.

Promise
to
myself...

Tom and I
will take
a vacation
to
Appalachia
in the fall
someday.

I notice
a
man
staring
at my
passengers...

You
like
bikes?
I
ask
him.

I've
biked
RAGBRAI
three
times,
he says.

I've
biked
across
America,
I say.

He gives
me
a big
hug!

A
fellow
crazy
cyclist!

We
make
friends
everywhere!

Now
I
drive...

On
into
Pennsylvania

State
number
33!

(if you
count
Nevada)

The
Welcome
Center
in Pennsylvania
is
nice...

Memorial
to men
who
died here
coal
mining.

Let's
stop
this
blasted
deadly
black energy!

It's
time
for
clean
power!

I'm going
home
and
changing
all my
lightbulbs!

Meanwhile
James
at
the
Welcome
Center....

has
biking
suggestions
for
Pennsylvania.

I think
tonight
I'll just
bike
from
my hotel...

in
Washington
PA.

Little
do
I know
what
Washington
PA
looks like!

And that
with all
my
lollygagging....

it
would
be
so dark!

Luckily
I am
brave!

(or
foolish).

I flick
on my
Frank
light...

named
after Frank,
my
bike
mechanic...

and
brave
the
spooky
neighborhoods...

of
Washington
PA.

I've
biked
33
states
now...

(more
or
less).

and
where
do
I go...

next?

  2. Hawaii sounds great! But first I have to do Montana (Glacier National Park) and Alaska!

  3. Helen, I came accross your block while looking a facebook page. I am a beginner and am trying to find a reasonable, low priced road/speed bike. My experience is only with hybrid bike I bought at local department store and also spin class. I am getting bored of running and my friend has inspired me but she lives in Chicago and doesn't know the resources in this area.

Thank you, Laura Baker (you can email me at thebakers2468@comcast.net)
