Stubby
is the other cat.
You've heard
all about Dusty.
But it's time you hear
The Story of Stubby.
It was a cold wintry day
at Jeffery street.
We were warm inside.
Mom
Dad
Four kids
Two dogs and two cats.
We had our hands full!
Suddenly we noticed a stranded kitten at our front door.
Scrawny
Pitiful
He had no tail.
(I have no pictures from then. You'll have to use your imagination)
Not needing a third cat
we decided to clean him up
and find him a home.
Took him to the vet for shots.
Bad news.

He had feline leukemia virus.
The good news?
New research showed a kitten might clear the virus.
He just needs to be in quarantine for a month
away from other cats
because he is contagious.
This is a problem.
We can't take him home to infect our two cats
Merlin and Tiger.

The Humane Society
wouldn't keep him.
It would be crazy to pay the vet to board a kitten for one month...
A kitten
we don't even want.

I called the vet to have him put to sleep.
I couldn't say the words.
I didn't know what to do!
Luckily, we have a second garage.
No entrance to the house.
So I squirreled the tailless kitten
in the garage for one month
Without telling anyone.
I would sneak out food and water out
to the little kitty in the dark.
Little Alex found out - was she six years old?
She began helping me
with our little vagabond.
Finally
after 28 days
Tom came in the den and sat down.
- I just went in the second garage..." he said.
Oops.
- What did you think I did with the kitty?
You never asked.
This story has a happy ending
- as you might have guessed.
Two days later the kitty tested clean for the virus!
By now, we loved him.
And Tom was okay with things -
In fact, it was he
who dubbed the new kitty with his name...
...Stubby.
for obvious reasons.
And Little Nicky bonded with this kitty.
from childhood...
through teenage days...
...and on into college years.
The girls have left home now
TJ and Tom have moved to Fishers
The Jeffery Street house
is now empty...
...but I still have my Stubby.

ReplyDeleteHelen I love your post! I, too, am an animal lover and feed everything that comes into the yard. This summer we acquired a mama cat and two little kittens...all three all black. I had been putting out food by the garage for mama to eat during the winter. She is so small...her paws are no larger than a quarter. She would come down the road from our neighbor's barn and go back after eating. This past June she appeared one day with three kittens in tow. We made them a little home on the porch and they stayed. After a couple of weeks sadly one kitten was missing one morning. When the remaining kittens were old enough I contacted an agency in Tippecanoe County called Trap, Neuter and Release and they assisted me in capturing the mama and her kittens to be taken to my vet for spay and neutering. We now have three beautiful outdoor cats, two beautiful old and grumpy indoor cats, and one dog...each one a rescue pet.
